They say football is a matter of life and death. They are wrong: it is much more than that. – Bill Shankly
I have been watching and playing football from more than 15 years, it is very close to my heart, everyone knows that it is an unpredictable game. The lessons and experiences that I learned from this game are priceless, and I wouldn’t trade those experiences for anything in this world.
It has everything, guts, and glory, heartaches, joy, happiness, tears, everything. Everything comes at a price in this game, and the things we learn in this game, the skills we learn in this game can also be used in our life.
Here are some of the most important lessons that I’ve learned from football.
Football teaches you to compete.
I’ve always believed that our competition won’t come from another team or any other person, but from ourselves. We are always competing against ourselves. We need to have a heart and motivation and a purpose to win the game, otherwise, you won’t amount to anything.
Use your fears to fuel your fire.
Not everyone is going to believe in your dreams, you need to believe in yourself and fight against all the odds. Whenever you feel insecure in life about your job, about your results or about anything, use it in a positive way.
Most people have dreams, almost everyone, but they’re scared, they’re scared to fail, they are not willing to do whatever it takes to achieve it, my suggestion to you is that don’t be most people who are not taking the first step, take the first step and never stop.
Football teaches us to have a dream and a vision.
Every year a new season starts, whatever that’s done is done in the previous season, the manager gives their player a fresh start then why don’t we give ourselves a fresh start after setbacks?
Every year they start with the mindset to finish at the mid-table or at the top, you also need to have a vision, a vision that is so clear and so powerful that nothing can stop you, there are absolutely no limits for what you can have and achieve, set a goal that excites you.
Only limits are the limits that you have placed for yourself, by yourself.
Never Give Up.
I’m a huge fan of Lionel Messi and undoubtedly he is one of the best players to have ever played this sport and he knows it, does it mean he will always win? Absolutely not. He fails, he fails hard sometimes, defeats are tough to deal with, failures make you feel like giving up, does it mean you give up? No, do not go down.
Messi does not talk much, but his games talk enough for him, he does not go down even after so many tackles, even after so many failures, defeats, heartaches, and much more. Not to say that the careers of many other players were easy, but we’re talking about even the best are not safe from the shadows of the failures.
Don’t let things on the outside be stronger than what’s on the inside.
When you have a dream, you have to protect it.
As said earlier, people won’t believe in you when you tell them about your ambitions, so what?
You know what, have goals so big that it scare small minds. Make no mistake of calling it a dream always, have a plan for it, make it your target take small steps every day towards it. Just like a football team plays to win, plays to win the title. It’s a long journey, I mean success is a journey, it isn’t an overnight thing, you have to work hard to get it.
The world will remember your name only if you give it a reason to remember your name, but success isn’t something that is reserved for the specials among us if they can have it, you can have it, the only way is work, hard work.
It hurts when people call some champion, the legend, an overnight success, that is exactly what some people call Messi, he replied “I start early and I stay late, day after day, year after year. It took me 17 years and 114 days to become an overnight success.”
How real is that, if you have a dream, you have to protect it.
Criticism? Build through it.
We cannot imagine the trauma these players go through when they fail at International level. Audience, media, analysts, don’t let them have a moment of peace. They ask them to quit immediately, the stars of yesterday can instantly become a burden for the team. But, just when we think it is over for the player, they don’t fail to surprise us by coming back even stronger. Failures never fail to haunt us, but YOU are YOU, YOU will NEVER GIVE UP.
There are some things that will always be in your control and one of those is ‘Whether or not you try again after the setback.’ Some don’t, but you have a choice, whether to get up or give up.
Discipline can win you anything.
I’m a big fan of discipline, it can do wonders. Just look at anyone who has ever achieved anything significant in life and ask them how they did it, the answer will be ‘Discipline’.
A football player has to start early in the day and the ones who start even earlier are the ones talked about for ages, they have to maintain their diet and their mental state, it’s hard, but it’s all worth it in the end. I guess, pretty much similar in our day to day life? An unhealthy lifestyle will surely lead us into an unhealthy life and guess what? The reverse is also true.

Risk Big to Win Big.
What’s the point of life if you’re stuck at a low level. You have to do something to get out of your comfort zone, something big. Just like when you play a game and you get stuck at suppose level 8 and you quit without ever realizing that what would have been like to play at level 18.
Do anything with your heart.
Just as a football player strikes the ball and follows through with the motion of it and hopes that it ends up in the back of the net, we need to go and get our goals and targets with the same intensity. It’s not just enough to wish it, we need to go and get it. We cannot walk in with our eyes half-opened, we need to keep our eyes fully opened and that’s the fact. It’s almost as if the world we are living in, is the kind of world where only the hungrier survives. The choice is yours.
Choices are everywhere.
Every now and then we are handed choices, the choice to eat healthy food, the choice to go to the gym, the choice to finish the important work over the unnecessary stuff which gives us pleasure and not to procrastinate. We are the product of our choices, poor or not, I don’t know, but if you ever find yourself in a situation that’s degrading you, just look back at the choices you made, you brought yourself there, no one else.
It is never too far.
Success is all those boring things put together, done again and again, but hey, that’s how little steps add up, isn’t it?
You will never get ‘Something for Nothing.’ The world just doesn’t work that way, you give more, you get more. Countless heartaches will always be there, but, we are looking at the bigger picture here, we are looking at the tip of the mountain, but that doesn’t mean we are ignoring the climb, you will not get there in a day, but you will get there absolutely and definitely.
If you’re playing this game called life with the absolute goal in your head always, you will make it through. Being a huge fan of Lionel Messi, I’ve learned to remain silent while I am in the game, I’ve learned that it’s never too late to try again, and it’s never going to end until I make it.
Lionel Messi is a pure genius, he is truly an artist of that game, he designs it for himself and for those around him, doesn’t matter wherever we are, whoever we are, he creates the kind of moments that makes you want to watch football. You can stand in rain, sit through meaningless moments just waiting and hoping, waiting to be inspired by his pure moments of magic, and he leaves absolutely no reason for not calling it ‘The Beautiful Game.’
But, life isn’t just that simple always, is it?
We all think about where we are moving in life, are we going to even make it, we all struggle with these thoughts and it mostly happens at night, right? Learn to fight it, take the pain and ignite it, make fuel out of it to move towards your goals. I’ve stopped calling it a Dream because I love to visualize them, it’s fun, isn’t it?
So, to sum up, I will say, don’t go down, never, you won’t make it when you’re down, people won’t be inspired by you when you’re down, make someone a believer, because the things on the outside will never be strong enough than what’s on the inside.
