Humans are an emotional being, nothing new, that’s something everybody knows; however, there is something that we generally neglect that we let our emotions run our days. You’ve probably noticed yourself saying ‘I’m not in the mood right now.’
Why do we let our ‘mood’ dictate our actions? Well, it’s not to say that if we follow our emotions they will get us in trouble, following our heart(emotions) can be perceived as great quality. But, allowing our emotions to dictate our daily activities can surely get us in trouble and can lead to depression, anxiety, procrastination, etc. These things directly or indirectly can haunt our careers, relationships, and health.
There are certain emotions that help us feel better, an urge to laugh when others are laughing is a good example; however, feeling to punch the person when he cuts you in the lane cannot be considered as a valid response of your emotion.
Just like any other thing you practice and learn, regulating emotions is one such that can be learned if practiced the right way. It’s better to be prepared than to regret later, which may be more easily said than done. Emotions are something that actually has the potential to dictate our lives, so why not spend at least some time to learn how to regulate them?
Address your feelings
It’s inevitable to feel the highs and the lows of life. Though we all feel them, it’s better not to camouflage them. I mean, address your emotions, your feelings. If you’re feeling sad or anxious, it’s important for anyone to own it and understand the reason behind it.
Don’t let one emotion or a single feeling mask the other one, take one thought at a time and address it.
It’s crucial to know that these emotions can greatly influence your decision making power, so it’s better to check on them before jumping into taking a decision.
Kill those Negative Thoughts
How do you feel when you walk into a room full of strangers? If you think, “I am totally looking like a fool, these people are so well dressed and I don’t even know how am I going to spend one-hour in this room.”
Why would you ‘think’ like this when you can think, “I’m going to make the most out of this opportunity, I will make amazing friends in the next hour and have a great conversation with them.”
Do you see the difference? It is all in your head, the way you think about yourself can decide what you do. It is essential that you think about the situation in a positive way before deciding to make a conclusion.
If you think from a positive perspective you will continue to have positive results, the reverse is also true.
What if I were to tell you that you will never be able to control your emotions? Wait, there is still something better. This is a greater take, the physical actions, the things that you’re doing will always be in your control, isn’t it?
It’s better to engage yourself than to continue to procrastinate. If you continuously let your emotions decide what your actions will be then you will actually ‘look like a fool in the room.’
Let’s face reality for a while, “The clock is always ticking, the past is increasing and the future is receding.” You will continue to miss countless opportunities unless you find a way to make the most out of them instead of sitting there letting your emotions, your feelings dictate your actions.
We’re already a long way into this decade, what you do with your life is up to you. The sooner you realize this fact, the better it will be for you.
“Don’t let your emotions distract you from doing what needs to be done. Control your emotions or your emotions will control you.”
